The Beauty in the Tears: Why Every Moment Matters in Childhood Photography

Updated: Jul 8

As a photographer, specializing in newborn and childhood photography, I’ve seen it all—giggles, grins, stubborn frowns, runaway toddlers, and yes… even tears. And you know what? I treasure every single moment.

Because childhood isn't always posed smiles and picture-perfect backdrops. It's real. It's raw. It's beautifully unpredictable.

The Truth About Happy Babies (and Why It’s Okay if They’re Not)

Parents often arrive at a session hoping for that perfect photo—bright-eyed, smiling, angelic little faces. And while we always aim for joy-filled images, sometimes your child is just… not feeling it. They might be teething, tired, overwhelmed, or just having a day. And that’s okay.

As a photographer, I don’t wait for perfection. I look for connection.

That pouty lower lip? It tells a story. The tight cuddle into mom’s shoulder? That’s comfort and trust. Even the tear running down a cheek can be breathtakingly beautiful when seen through the lens of love.

Capturing the Full Story

Some of my favorite photos aren't the ones where your child is smiling at the camera. They're the ones where you see them being themselves—curious, cautious, or quietly observing the world around them. Those honest moments are part of who they are right now, and they deserve to be remembered just as much as the giggles.

Because childhood is a journey. It’s soft and messy, wild and wonderful. And it doesn’t need to be edited into something it’s not.

So, What If My Baby Cries?

Let them. We’ll pause. We’ll play. We’ll take breaks. I’ll follow their lead. My sessions are always child-led because no great photo ever comes from pressure. Sometimes, a shy moment gives way to a joyful one. Other times, we embrace the mood and create something authentic and tender. Either way, we’re capturing the truth of your child’s spirit—right now, as they are. If you're in the studio

I may even bribe with something from the prize box!

Final Thoughts

Years from now, you won’t just remember how your child looked. You’ll remember how they were—the way they clung to your finger, the furrowed brow before a laugh, the way they lit up at the sight of you. And when you see those photos, you’ll feel it all again.

So don’t worry if your child isn’t all smiles during our session. I promise: we’ll still create something beautiful—because your child is beautiful, just as they are.
